Paul Revere Gold Jewelry at Boston Museum of Fine Arts - I recently visited the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and learned that the famous patriot Paul Revere was not only a silversmith but also dabbled a bit with being a goldsmith as well.
Here is the description from the museum:
Mourning ring, 1783
Gold
Although we know from his records that patriot and silversmith Paul Revere made gold jewelry, including mourning rings, this ring is the only known example that actually bears Paul Revere's mark. The inscription on the inside reads "Rev'd Saml. Dunbar ob June 15, 1783 AE 78." Samuel Dunbar, a minister from Canton, Massachusetts and a staunch member of the pro-revolution group the Sons of Liberty (Paul Revere was a member as well was the first minister to publicly read the Declaration of Independence from the pulpit. This ring was made for his funeral; it was a custom to give out mourning rings to friends and relatives after a person's death.
